I visited Creek’s Edge Winery in late September, an excellent time to view this striking property under a hint of fall color. Creek’s Edge is a day trip from Washington, DC in rural Loudon County, Virginia, an area with a growing winery presence (43 wineries at the time of my visit) and a natural welcoming atmosphere of gravel country roads and rustic barns and buildings.

Creek’s Edge is located in the tiny hamlet of Taylorstown where a general store and a stone-foundation barn wear signs directing visitors to the winery. A gravel road winds to an impressive Amish-built facility ... Read full review

Susan Tipton, winemaker and founder of Acquiesce Winery & Vineyards in Lodi, California, fell in love with a white wine from Châteauneuf de Pape, in France’s Southern Rhône Valley. What she tasted in France inspired her to try something unique: to grow white Rhône varietals in Lodi, where she’d recently relocated with her husband Rodney. Ready to begin the dream that would become Acquiesce, Susan sourced vines from Château de Beaucastel of Châteauneuf du Pape and planted them on her property, which at the time was a Zinfandel vineyard.

Tipton believed that the sandy soil and Mediterranean climate in ... Read full review

Three friends have traveled about 90 miles from Saint Louis to spend a few days in Springfield, Illinois, the nearest city to Danenburger Family Vineyards, where they start their weekend at the tasting bar. Another customer, who will later reveal himself as a local enthusiast, enjoys a chilled bottle of white wine at a small table with a very relaxed winery dog at his feet.

It’s just-this-side of the weekend, about 2:00 on a Friday afternoon. It’s just-this-side of spring with a winter-leftover chill on the wind and intense clouds fighting off the sun. The mood ... Read full review

Tabor Hill Winery & Restaurant   0

When people talk about Southwest Michigan wineries, they often mention Tabor Hill Winery and Restaurant. Tabor Hill’s winemaker, Michael Merchant, has been around for over 30 years, and in that time his wine has been served in the White House, praised by celebrities and awarded graciously.

I visited with my husband and two friends, and we had the tasting room to ourselves for most of the time we spent there. It was 5:00 on a Saturday, an hour when many local wineries close their doors for the day. Tabor Hill’s tasting room stays open until ... Read full review

We stopped into Fenn Valley Vineyards and Wine Cellar, in Southwest Michigan, on an afternoon when lake effect snow had fallen and temperatures were low. We were welcomed into the warm and bustling tasting room by Amy, who provided us tasting menus and glasses as well as her offer to answer our questions and chat with us about Fenn Valley. Our host was attentive, knowledgeable and friendly and made the tasting experience relaxing and fun. The tasting room is casual, farmhouse-rustic and well-equipped and features an ample tasting bar with plenty of staff.

We were a ... Read full review
