Another stop on the Coastal Wine Trail in Rhode Island over the Christmas holiday brought us to the newly-renovated tasting room of Newport Vineyards. Originally founded in 1977, this sought-after farming area overlooking the Rhode Island sound provides the perfect micro climate for cool climate grape varieties. Owned and operated by John and Paul Nunes, the vineyard has grown to close to 60 acres since their initial plantings acquired from Captain Richard Alexander in 1995. In 2015, the vineyard tasting room will add a new restaurant, Brix, and expand the tasting facilities from the small tasting room ... Read full review

Many of my articles are focused on Virginia wineries or wineries in whichever state I have the luxury of traveling to during my work trips. For those who are not aware, I grew up in the smallest state in the United States - Rhode Island. When most people think New England, they think cold winters, great beaches and awesome seafood, and it just so happens that many Rhode Island wine offerings are crisp, clean whites that pair absolutely perfectly with many of the seafood dishes that this gorgeous state offers.

One of the most popular ... Read full review

This past weekend, we ventured into wine country for the first time in many weeks. Lately, I'll admit, life has been busy with work and other obligations. After browsing through the list of recently opened wineries, I came across one that had received high praise from some local wine lovers like myself. Arterra Vineyard and Winery became one of my must-visit wineries. Arterra is located just around the corner from Three Fox, up the street from Naked Mountain and close to Barrel Oak in Virginia's Middleburg AVA.

During the Christmas rush, my wife and I ventured towards Williamsburg to take in the sights and sounds of the holidays. Those who know me, know that any trip is an opportunity to visit a winery. One of the newer Virginia wineries that we were able to visit was Saude Creek Vineyards located in Lanexa. This gorgeous property, still gleaming with new appeal, is located in New Kent County not far from New Kent Winery. The privately-owned vineyard bears about 22 acres on property and includes Vidal Blanc, Chardonnay, Petit Verdot and Chambourcin. The seven nearby off-site ... Read full review

The first time I visited Mountfair Vineyards, I was relatively new to the wine scene. Needless to say, it has been a while. In fact, what brought Mountfair back to my attention was their social media outreach as we were touring the area on this particular day.

The winery itself is located on the Eastern slope of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Mountfair, not far from Charlottesville, and the tasting room resembles a small, wooden cottage. This is not a bad thing - just think entirely wood, cozy, and quaint. As we parked and approached, grilled ... Read full review

Every fall, my wife and I enjoy heading out to Middleburg to take in the beauty of the historic town, enjoy the country cuisine, view the rolling hillsides of horse country and stop by local wineries. This particular late fall visit brought us upon Greenhill Winery. To those not familiar with this particular area of the state, Greenhill was known as Swedenburg Winery until the death of their owner, Juanita Swedenburg, in 2007 and subsequent sale of the property and facilities. For years, one of the larger growers in Crozet, Virginia was known by the name of Mount Juliet Farm. Winemakers throughout Virginia purchased grapes from Mount Juliet, who harvested close to 63 acres and over 14 varieties of grape. The estate sits nearly 550 acres of land - with 250 acres protected with deer fencing. This year marked the inaugural year of Mount Juliet Farm producing their own under the label of Grace Estate Winery with the help of winemaker Jake Busching. Founded in 1996 and producing their first vintage in 1999, Quixote Winery is one of the Stags’ Leap District’s hottest new wineries. Carl Doumani, owners of the neighboring Stags’ Leap Winery, wanted to create a small, boutique winery that focuses almost exclusively on one of his favorite grapes, Petite Sirah.

Doumani also wanted to produce a winery that was sustainable and produced organic wines. Doumani persuaded Viennese architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser to design the winery, and it is the only structure built by Hundertwasser in the United States to date. The winery, from the ... One of the highlights of our recent trip to Napa and Sonoma was Stags' Leap Winery. The first thing that a lot of folks I speak to say is, "Yea, the Artemus right?" No, not THAT Stags' Leap. My fiancé likes to remind people that this particular Stags' Leap positions the apostrophe after the S (not before) and was established approximately a year prior to the Artemus-producing Stag's Leap.

As you spot the new Wisdom Oak Winery sign, planted where the former Sugarleaf Vineyards sign stood, you will find yourself traveling up a gravel, single lane road that appears to be the road to nowhere. As the trees clear and the farm house converted to tasting room, outlined by the 4 acres of vines in the background, appears, you instantly release a sigh of relief and can truly take a step back to admire the beauty of the Wisdom Oak grounds.

Owner Jerry Bias purchased the property over a decade ago then under the Sugarleaf ... Read full review

The Delmare family moved from California in the late 1990s with the hope of raising their family in a farming environment. The matriarch, Marialisa Delmare, has a family background rich in farming history with over 100 years of experience and a very successful fruit packing business. Their journey in the vineyard business began shortly before the move to California when they purchased Saratoga Vineyards (which is now Savannah-Channele Vineyards) in the Santa Cruz Mountains in California. The experience of producing wine from 90 year old Chardonnay, Zinfandel, and Cabernet Franc vines, as well as having the ability ... Read full review

Located off California Highway 128 is Storybook Mountain Vineyards, the family-owned estate and organic winery at the northern end of Napa Valley. I'll be honest - I had never heard of Storybook Mountain prior to a friend introducing me to their elegant Zinfandels. My friend, John, is a Storybook wine club member and has been since having the experience of a lifetime during a visit to the winery a couple of years ago. Our first trip to Napa would have not been the same if had we not taken the opportunity to visit this establishment, learn the history, ... Read full review

When most visitors arrive at a winery, the last thing they really focus on is the history of the land... unless they are visiting Scribe Winery. Most wineries also have tasting rooms where large groups flock around a small bar, jam through the doorways, litter the grounds with blankets, or stand outside until there is room for them to enter. Scribe has none of any of this; in fact, you are required to make an appointment to visit, and a fee of $25 is required. Scribe provides visitors with a truly unique experience.

So how did ... Read full review

After our trip to Chateau Montelana, we drove down the Silverado Trail in search of a short pit stop at a small winery to kill some time. We had no idea what we were about to encounter when we came upon Lava Vine’s tasting room. Located in the heart of Calistoga, the driveway to the tasting room is marked by an enormous, curling vine located above a sign bearing the words “Lava Vine”.

In 2000, Joe Cabral purchased property containing a 4 acre vineyard in Franz Valley and began reworking the steeply sloped vineyard ... Read full review

During our most recent trip to Napa, we came across a little time to take a stroll around St. Helena. This is a gorgeous, small town located in the center of historical Napa Valley that provides visitors with boutique shops, restaurants, and cafes along the route to the surrounding wine country. It was during this stroll through St. Helena that we came across the newly opened Orin Swift tasting room.

I hate to say it, but as of late it has been increasingly difficult to bring myself to visit Loudoun County with the sudden explosion of new wineries popping up around the county. The good, established wineries are becoming outnumbered by people that are more interested in opening the newest Northern Virginia Wine Country hot spot than they are in producing quality wine. However, after I learned that Two Twisted Posts' 2012 Chardonnay was included in the 2014 Governor's Case, I had to see what all the buzz was about. Based on my visit to Two ... Read full review

As we were departing Justin Vineyards, the tasting room staff offered us suggestions on destinations to visit next. We were looking for some small to medium-sized gems that would offer us the most unique experience, and one place that topped that list was Halter Ranch Vineyard. Halter Ranch is located in the Paso Robles Westside Adelaida District and produces Bordeaux and Rhône-style wines made from 100% sustainable, estate-grown grapes. The ranch itself has been around since the late 1800s when it was originally owned by businessman Edwin Smith, who was a dealer in produce and livestock and was ... Read full review

After browsing through the last couple editions of Wine Enthusiast, I came across multiple Virginia wineries posting 87+ point rated wines. I also noticed an unfamiliar name with several wines that ranged from 89 to 91 points, including a Pinotage. A Pinotage? In Virginia? In the United States, there are maybe 60 acres of Pinotage grown total, and 2 of those 60 just so happened to be planted at Lovingston Winery in Lovingston, Virginia (just south of Charlottesville). After reading about their wines, I made it a point to visit this winery on my next trip, and this ... Read full review

Founded by the Hambsch Family in 2008, Loving Cup Vineyard and Winery opened its doors to the public this past June. After a short couple of years, Moss Vineyards has really hit its stride in the heart of Central Virginia. I recall the first time I visited the winery shortly after it opened its doors. One of the first wines I ever tasted from Paso Robles was the Justin Cabernet Sauvignon.

Founded in 1996 and producing their first vintage in 1999, Quixote Winery is one of the Stags’ Leap District’s hottest new wineries. Doumani also wanted to produce a winery that was sustainable and produced organic wines. Doumani persuaded Viennese architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser to design the winery, and it is the only structure built by Hundertwasser in the United States to date. The winery, from the ...
