If you're a wayward foodie or a wandering wine guru and you've found yourself in Santa Barbara by some strange twist of fortune, your salvation may be The Wine Cask and the adjacent tasting rooms in El Paseo, just off the beaten path of State Street. This is where you'll find the premium combination of pre-dinner wine tasting at Margerum (or the adjoining Au Bon Climat and Grassini tasting rooms) with dinner at the renowned restaurant in the courtyard. I don't know if the meaning of life can be found here in the courtyard nestled ... Read full review

Carr Vineyards & Winery is unique in Santa Barbara. It literally stands apart from the other main wine tasting areas in the city, and it figuratively separates itself as a midpoint between the casual atmosphere of the "Funk Zone" and the old-world refined style of El Paseo. Set inside a World War II era airplane hangar, the tasting bar has been built to look and feel like you're casually stepping into your local pub. If it weren't for the massive ceilings, presses, tanks, and barrels stacked five high, it would be easy to picture an old European cave ... Read full review

There are many places in the town of Santa Barbara to taste better than average vino and generally enjoy an hour or two. Then there is Au Bon Climat (ABC). Welcoming you to the historic El Paseo - next door to tasting rooms for Grassini and Margerum - this tasting room is a vinophile stop, not merely a party hop. Jim Clendenen, the winemaker, weaves together a tapestry of adventurous award-winning bottles with insanely knowledgeable service in an environment that is meant to do one thing: explore masterful wine. The center of Los Olivos is an old town, not much more than an intersection, with the longest section about the length of a football field. Packed into this tiny town are about a dozen tasting rooms, a smattering of small inns, and a few restaurants worth visiting. You can easily stay here, eat here, drink here, and never walk more than 100 yards in any direction. It's perfect for a lounging romantic getaway, a writer's escape, or a quick wine holiday from any of the major cities in California.

Often the word "fine" precedes the word "wine" during dinner conversation. I don't know exactly where and when in our history we began associating these words together; but I will say that the most natural word I can come up with in order to describe the wines of Core is exactly this: Fine. The mouthfeel is refined and soothing, the aromas are sophisticated and exuberant, and especially in the blend of the Hard Core, I find myself admiring not the sum of the parts but the quality of the whole. There is undiscovered luxury here.

I love wine. I love wine tasting. There's something beautiful in the act of both giving and receiving the gift of a few ounces of the meticulously crafted art and applied science that we call wine. It is a humbling thing to consider the amount of time and passion that is put into each drop of the wine we casually drink at dinner. There's a moment right when the winemaker pours that splash into the glass - the moment of the giving and receiving - that inspires me. If you ever get a chance to meet a true winemaker in ... The pace of Santa Barbara is about what you imagine from a surfer-friendly, wine-cultured seaside town with a year-round Mediterranean climate... it's relaxed. Things open (more or less) right on time, no rush. Walking along the beach, it might strike you to make lower Anacapa street your destination for a relaxing wine tasting. You might venture off the sand, cross the oceanside street, and find yourself choosing which tasting room (or how many) to enter.

If you find yourself in this situation (make sure you appreciate the greatness of it, first), I highly recommend the experience of ... Read full review

Situated among the rolling hills of Santa Maria Valley, I walk in to the enormous wood-and-stone building prepared with a sense of adventure and the melody of an old tune I used to love as a kid playing in my head, "Davy... Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier." Yes, I'm about to taste the wines of Fess Parker Family Winery and Vineyards. Parker, the man best known to millions for his portrayals of Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone on TV, spent the latter part of his life building and running a successful winery a short drive north of Los ... Welcome to Santa Barbara, just under two hours north from Los Angeles. The seat of the eponymous wine valley, university, and beach, Santa Barbara's seaside surfer culture and Mediterranean climate will woo you into forgetting the stop-and-go traffic of the 405 or the trauma of incessant smog. "Good Vibrations" by the Beach Boys spills out of open doors onto the sidewalks, inviting you to say hello to neighbors, grab a latte, and just enjoy the day from behind your shades. It would sound too good to be true - and I'm sure it is; but it's easy to experience a ... Read full review

The Grassini tasting room in "El Paseo," just off the beaten path of State Street in downtown Santa Barbara, should be on your map if you are serious about tasting what the Central Coast can do with Bordeaux grapes. I almost skipped Grassini, honestly, because I was short on time; and generally wanted to avoid the more touristy side of town. I'm glad I was told by every other winery to make El Paseo a stop on my tour. Don't miss these tasting rooms if you love wine.
