Winery Map of the Day – Sonoma's Top Syrah

Although I love the flavor profile of Cabernet Sauvignon, I find it somewhat boring. Not boring enough to keep it from routinely occupying my glass mind you, but boring enough to drink it without giving it much thought. If I'm looking for excitement, if I'm looking for a wine to really engage my senses and give me something to think about, I'll reach for a Pinot Noir or a Syrah nine times out of ten.

Our last two winery maps focused on Sonoma Pinot Noir, so today is dedicated to Sonoma Syrah. Even more so than Pinot Noir, exceptional Syrah can be produced in a relatively wide range of climates. Wines sourced from opposing edges of the climatic range will have very different characteristics, but they can be excellent regardless of from which edge they originate. For cool climate Syrahs, fruit flavors are usually secondary, and olive, black pepper, herbs, and meaty flavors dominate. Warm climate Syrah typically shows loads of dark blue and black fruits, and the best warm climate Syrah usually display ample amounts of cool climate Syrah flavors as well.

Sonoma is one of the best places in the world to explore the entire spectrum of Syrah, and the Sonoma wineries on today's map, all recognized as Sonoma Syrah leaders, should be a part of that exploration. Wineries include Arnot-Roberts, Copain, Red Car Wine Co. , Siduri and 12 others.
