The Carmel Valley is located between the Pacific Ocean and the Salinas Valley. Grapes are grown both within the Carmel Valley itself and within the warmer and higher elevation Cachagua Valley.

Carmel Valley has about twenty wineries, three quarters of which are open for tasting without an appointment. Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah do particularly well in this warm, high altitude environment.
