The Columbia Gorge is one of only two Washington AVAs (the other being Puget Sound) located outside of the Columbia Valley. The Gorge’s defining characteristic is the corridor created by the Columbia River cutting through the Cascade Mountains. The area ranges from steep, volcanic rock to terraced benchlands. The corridor creates a wind tunnel with cool marine air from western Washington replenishing hot, dry air from eastern Washington. As a result, the western portion of the Gorge is considerably cooler and wetter than the eastern portion. One of Washington’s best regarded vineyards, Celilo, is located in the western part of the Gorge, and its grapes are used in top rated wines produced by Ken Wright Cellars, Syncline and Woodward Canyon.
