The U.S. Department of the Treasury Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau established the Mt. Harlan American Viticultural Area (AVA) after receiving a petition from Josh Jensen, owner of Calera Wine Company. The AVA is located in San Benito County at elevations of 1800 feet to 2200 feet and has extensive limestone deposits. Although the AVA was approved in 1990, grapes have been grown in this Monterey Bay-cooled region since the 1970s.
