Michigan's Old Mission Peninsula American Viticultural Area (AVA), established in 1987, is located on the Old Mission Peninsula which extends approximately 18 miles northward from Traverse City into the Grand
Traverse Bay of Lake Michigan. The climate of the peninsula, similar to the Leelanau Peninsula on the west side of the bay, is moderated by the surrounding water allowing for the growing of cool-climate Vitis vinifera varieties.
