The Stags Leap District is about six miles north of the city of Napa and occupies a pseudo valley within Napa Valley. The Stags Leap District is bounded to the east by the Stags Leap Palisades and to the west by gently rolling hills flanking the Silverado Trail. The heat reflecting of the Palisades results in the district being significantly warmer than the adjacent Yountville appellation.

The Stags Leap District was made famous in 1976 when a 1973 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon took first place in the Paris Blind Tasting organized by Steven Spurrier, an English wine merchant who owned an innovative wine shop and adjacent wine school in the center of Paris. Stags Leap red wines are typically described as medium to full bodied, intense yet elegant, with rich flavors of currant, cassis, spices, licorice and minerals.

Stags Leap District has almost 20 wineries with all of them providing tasting and a third of them requiring an appointment.
