Silver Trident Winery is a Napa Valley-based winery located in Yountville, the charming “Culinary Capital of the Napa Valley” that offers a completely different and singular wine tasting experience. Silver Trident is a Tuscan-style “tasting home” featuring a sit down tasting in an upscale setting with Ralph Lauren furniture, home decor, and other accessories. In fact, it is the only Ralph Lauren outlet combined with a winery in the world! Not only that, but everything in the tasting room, which is one of a kind (not sold in any Ralph Lauren shops or their website), is for sale.
The Tasting Experience
Founded in 2015, Silver Trident is the brainchild of founders Bob Binder and Walter Jost, both of whom come from the travel industry. Binder was cofounder of Oceania Cruises, where he helped establish the luxury line’s food as one of the finest at sea. Along the way, he collaborated with food luminaries such as Jacques Pépin, as well as Bon Appétit and Wine Spectator. Jost is past president of one of the world’s most prestigious travel companies.
The wine tasting experience at Silver Trident literally begins on the red carpet that shepherds guests into the Tuscan-style, stone “tasting home”. There, you’ll be warmly greeted by a host offered a chilled glass of the Silver Trident Apollo’s Folly Rosé of Pinot Noir. As you savor the crisp, clean strawberry, raspberry, stone fruit, and spice character of the Provencal-style rosé, you study the beautifully appointed spaces full of carefully curated pieces in association with Ralph Lauren Home. Beautiful art covers the wall. Elegant furniture, floor coverings, and accessories abound. The intimate and inviting surroundings put you at ease.
When you’re ready, you’re guided to the living room, dining room, or library, and seated. Placed on the table in front of you are three different shaped glasses. And in front of those empty glasses are four hors d'oeuvres beautifully arranged on an impossibly clean rectangular white porcelain plate. Your host explains that each will be paired with one of four wines you’ll taste. You see a leather-bound menu for both the wines tasted and some of the items for sale.
2015 Symphony No. 9 Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc (paired with Labneh Goat Cheese with Preserved Lemon and Herbs): A delightful Sauvignon Blanc that showed very appealing grapefruit, lemon peel and tropical aromas and flavors with vibrant acidity, a kiss of minerality and a very satisfying finish. The wine found it’s soulmate in the appetizer. The freshness of the wine cut the richness of the appetizer, and the lemon and herb flavors of the appetizer highlighted the citrus, tropical fruit and mineral character of the wine.
2014 Benevolent Dictator Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir (paired with Porcini and Cremini Mushroom Duxelles with Black Truffle Powder): An elegant Pinot Noir with promising damp earth, bramble, Bing cherry and spice aromas. On the palate, it’s fresh and silky smooth with cherry, spice, and an appealing, savory character that invites another sip. Mushrooms and Pinot Noir is a sensational pairing, and the mushroom trifecta of Porcini, Cremini and Black Truffle was perfectly paired with the wine. The savory character of the wine mirrored the earthy elements of the mushrooms, while the bright acidity of the wine provided a beautiful counterpoint to the richness of the duxelle.
2012 Playing With Fire Napa Valley Red Blend (paired with Piquillo Pepper Pimento Cheese and Smoked Paprika on crostini): The fruit for this unconventional blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Malbec and 20% Syrah is sourced from Beckstoffer's Melrose Vineyard in Rutherford. It opens with aromatic violets, brambly dark fruit, black licorice, spice and vanilla aromas. On the palate it’s rich and concentrated with blackberry, plum, spice, and vanilla flavors wrapped around firm tannins and fresh acidity with a long, savory finish. It paired extremely well with the appetizer.
2012 Twenty Seven Fathoms Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (paired with Aged Gouda Savory Shortbread with Thyme and Sea Salt): This distinctive wine is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon and sourced from the Beckstoffer Vineyard as well as from Bob and Walter’s own Cabernet vineyard in St. Helena. It opens with enticing black currant, marionberry, a hint of plum, cacao, and baking spice aromas. On the palate it’s medium-bodied, elegant, and harmonious with firm well integrated tannins, flavors that mirror the aromas, and a long finish. The pairing with the savory shortbread cookie was my favorite.
This was truly a one of a kind, marvelous experience. The Ralph Lauren furnishings, decor and accessories are enticing, and you can’t beat the winery's combination of comfort, style, wine, and hospitality.
Silver Trident is smack dab in the middle of one of my favorite places in Napa’s wine country for dining – Yountville! Superstar chef Thomas Keller, of French Laundry fame has three other places in Yountville which are within walking distance of Silver Trident. You’ll need reservations for either Bouchon, which offers traditional French bistro fare, or Ad Hoc, which offers a more casual four-course family-style menu that changes daily, plus a wonderful Sunday Brunch.
No reservations? No problem. Try the Bouchon Bakery (but be prepared to wait in line) known for its artisanal breads and traditional French desserts, confections, pastries, tarts and cookies, as well as sandwiches, quiche, soups and made in-house salads. Or, Addendum an addition or footnote to the aforementioned Ad Hoc serving boxed lunches to-go. And there are picnic table available on site.
There are plenty of other dining options in Yountville as well. I like Bistro Jeanty and Redd too!
