Mendocino is the northern-most region within California’s North Coast AVA and contains the sub-AVAs of Anderson Valley, Cole Ranch, Covelo, Dos Rios, McDowell Valley, Potter Valley, Redwood Valley and Yorkville Highlands. Due to its relative remoteness, Mendocino wines were typically consumed locally. Now, with a robust and mature grape growing industry but a smaller wine making industry, over half of Mendocino’s grapes are exported to other California regions to be made into wine. Mendocino’s post-prohibition rebound began in the 1960s and for the next two decades, Mendocino vintners made significant advances with regards to site and variety selection and viticulture techniques. Mendocino is now leading the green wine revolution with a quarter of its grapes grown organically.
