The Rogue Valley is a sub-AVA of the Southern Oregon AVA and contains the Applegate Valley within its borders. The Valley contains a large number of micro-climates resulting in the cultivation of both cool and warm climate grapes. The Illinois, Applegate and Bear Creek rivers, and associated valleys, define this AVA that stretches from the Siskiyou Mountains to the California border. The western-most of the three, the Illinois River Valley, is most effected by the cooling effects of the Pacific Ocean and is the coldest of the three valleys; Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Gewürztraminer are the primary varieties. The Applegate Valley, located about 25 miles to the east, is warmer and dryer and Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot dominate. The easternmost valley, Bear Creek, is the hottest and driest valley resulting in ripe Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
