Although not as widely recognized as the Willamette Valley to the north, the Southern Oregon AVA, and its four sub-AVAs, proves that Oregon is more than Pinot Noir. The region stretches from south of Eugene to the California border and, like the Willamette Valley, is bordered on the west by the Coast Range and on the East by the Cascades. The Southern Oregon AVA has the warmest growing conditions in Oregon but also contains cool microclimates that allows for a broad range of grapes to be grown. Vineyards are typically located in high mountain valleys from 1000 to 2000 feet.
