Niobrara Valley Vineyards

Niobrara Valley Vineyards sits in the northern Nebraska Sandhills south of Nenzel, where a working beef cattle ranch and a vineyard share the same landscape. The first 200 vines went into the ground in 2002, and the winery side of the business took shape in 2010 after early bottlings sold out. Today the operation is still rooted in the Nollette family’s ranching history, but it has grown into a serious Nebraska producer with 2,350 vines, ten grape varieties, 6,500 gallons of tank capacity, and annual production of more than 3,000 cases.

This is a French-American hybrid house in a part of Nebraska better known for cattle than wine. Grapes grow at roughly 3,300 feet on sandy soils in a semi-arid climate, with hot days, cool nights, steady wind, and very cold winters shaping the fruit. Bottlings such as Boss Cow, Brianna, Marquette, Petite Pearl, Sweetheart Red, Rancher’s Red, and Sweet Pea show up repeatedly in competition results, including Best in Show White for Boss Cow at the 2024 International Cold Climate competition and Platinum for Boss Cow at the 2022 Great American International Wine Competition.

What it is actually like to visit: relaxed, rural, and a little more destination-driven than a quick drop-in tasting room. In season, the tasting room runs Wednesday through Sunday with light appetizers, Friday pizza nights, Saturday steak and burger dinners, and regular live music. Off-season visits shift to appointments and special events, so planning ahead matters here. The payoff is the setting itself: an island of grapes in an ocean of grass, with the Sandhills stretching out around the glass.
